The role of Aotearoa Gaming Trust in supporting community groups

New Zealand is rightly proud of the tight-knit nature of its communities. Central to these communities are organisations that address local needs, foster social interaction, and drive community development. An important support system for these groups is funding made available through Gaming Societies such as Aotearoa Gaming Trust. These societies, funded by gaming machine proceeds, play a vital role in the development and growth of community-based initiatives across the country. In 2023 $345.46m was awarded in grants, 9,783 organisations were funded and 23,982 total grants were accepted.

How Gaming Societies work

Gaming Societies in New Zealand are non-profit organisations that operate gaming machines outside of casinos. The revenue generated from these machines is channelled back into the community through grants and funding for various projects and groups. The legislative framework mandates that a significant portion of the profits from these machines is used for charitable purposes, ensuring that the benefits are widely distributed across different sectors.

Aotearoa Gaming Trust’s support for community groups

The way AGT funds community groups is through financial grants. These grants are essential for covering operational costs, purchasing equipment, and supporting programs that would otherwise struggle to find adequate resources. For many small community groups, these grants are lifelines that enable them to continue their vital work. Some of the grants provided by AGT help improve community facilities such as clubs, community centres, and cultural organisations. These facilities serve as hubs for social interaction, physical activity, and cultural exchange, providing a sense of belonging and community spirit.

AGT often awards funding for initiatives that promotes inclusivity and supports people from all walks of life. This approach ensures that all segments of the community, including youth, elderly, disabled, and minorities, have access to resources and opportunities that enhance their quality of life. By funding these types of organisations, AGT promotes volunteerism and community engagement and as many community groups rely heavily on volunteers, the support from these grants enables them to engage more volunteers and expand their reach and impact.

Importance to Kiwis

For many New Zealanders, community is a cornerstone of life. AGT funding helps to maintain and strengthen the bonds within communities, fostering a sense of unity and collective identity. This is particularly important in rural areas, where community groups can be vital in mitigating the effects of social isolation. Beyond social benefits, funding from AGT also has significant economic implications. By supporting local events, clubs, and festivals, AGT contributes to the local economy through tourism and local business patronage.
